What it is

Openings are wall-anchored (wall plus an offset along it, never world coordinates), so they survive a resize. Each carries a kind, clear width and height, offset, sill, an optional catalogue package id, an insulated flag, glazing and finish. Every opening produces a full framing package, a real 3D assembly, trim, and BOM lines.

Place a door and its framing comes with it

Every opening puts jamb posts, a header sized for the span, cripples and a window sill into the model and onto the order in the same action. Girt rows stop at the jamb faces instead of running through the doorway, and a grid post that lands inside an opening is dropped, its load carried by the header into the jambs. What is drawn is buildable as drawn.

Drag them into line and they line up

Drag an opening and guides pull its edges, centreline, sill and head onto the other openings — heads and sills match across every wall, because a window band usually runs at one height right around a building. Hold shift to lock the direction, alt to duplicate. Framing clearances are applied after the snap, so a guide you watched lock is a line you actually got.

The stepper simply stops where the wall stops

One rule set handles every width, height, offset and sill change, whether you typed it or dragged it: wall ends, clearance to the neighbours, manufactured size caps, and enough height left over for the header that span now needs. When one edge runs out of room the opening keeps growing the other way instead of refusing. It also says what stopped it — width stopped at a jamb, neighbor, or type limit.

Named by what goes through them, on both sides of the conversation

Entry Door, Overhead Door, Sliding Door, Window — one label on the menu, the material list, the estimate and the customer portal. Walk door is jargon a homeowner has never heard, garage door is wrong on a barn with no garage, and sliding door reads as a patio slider. The trade names still search, so man door or barn door finds the right thing.

Four windows, evenly spaced, in one drag

Shift-click a row of openings and move them as a group, then grab a joint between them to set equal gaps. Which end stays pinned depends on which joint you grabbed: the leftmost pins the right end, a middle joint holds the row's centre. Quarter, half and three-quarter buttons place things where somebody standing outside facing the wall would mean, on all four walls.

An insulated door looks insulated from the inside

Doors are built as full-depth assemblies rather than pictures on the skin: an overhead door is a hollow steel box with stiles and rails on its interior face, and the insulated version is visibly filled with foam. Windows get a jamb liner and glass set back for a real reveal. A barn door hangs outside on a track that runs past the opening, and the track and trolleys reach the order because the track is drawn. From inside in walk mode, the insulated upgrade is something the customer can see.

How it works
  1. 1Add from the panel (+ Door), from the right-click menu at the point you clicked, or by duplicating an existing one.
  2. 2Openings are labelled automatically per type in spec order (Door 1, Window 2, Garage Door 1), derived from the same array everywhere so the side panel and the viewport can never disagree.
  3. 3Drag to move with automatic smart guides; drag edge tabs to resize; multi-select to move or distribute a row.
  4. 4The engine emits jamb posts, a span-sized header, cripples, a window sill and interrupted girt rows for each one.
  5. 5The takeoff groups them by kind and size and adds opening trim by perimeter.
Why we built it

Openings positioned in open space float free the moment a wall moves, which leaves framing and steel hanging in mid-air. Every opening is anchored to its wall — which wall, which side, how far along — so resizing the building carries its doors and windows with it. A clamp runs over every opening before any geometry is derived, so no interface bug or hand-edited file can put framing in space, while the warnings a builder sees are computed from what they actually typed, so the message names the real mistake rather than the corrected value.

Drag an opening across the wall and it snaps to line up with the others — edges, centrelines, sills and heads — with framing clearances applied last so a snap can never produce an illegal placement.

Shift-click a row of openings, drag them together, then grab a joint between them to set equal gaps — with the pinned end determined by which joint you grabbed.

Position buttons that mean what a person standing outside facing the wall means — the left quarter is the left you can see.
