3D building designer

Draw a post-frame building in 3D by dragging its dimensions, and the framing, the panel layout and the material list come out the other side.

What it is

An in-house parametric designer for post-frame buildings at /3d-builder. One BuildingSpec (width, length, eave, pitch, bays, girts, purlins, overhangs, embedment, openings, additions, colours, services) drives a real three.js model and the material takeoff from the same derivation. It is a light-only, brand-themed internal tool behind the agency grant, with autosave, undo/redo, layers, camera views, walk mode and a right-click menu.

You size the building by pulling on it

Grab the ridge and the pitch follows, grab the eave and the wall height follows, grab an end wall and the building gets longer. The panel numbers move as you pull. The drag stops where a real building stops — a post longer than the yard stocks, a single-slope back wall taller than anything anyone builds — so every stop you hit is a stock or manufacturing limit rather than a number somebody picked.

Right-click a wall and it offers only what that wall can take

Right-click the roof and you get roof shape, roofing product, gutters, gutter guard and roof insulation. Right-click a wall and you get insulation for that wall, the floor, a frost footer, and the doors and windows you can drop exactly where you clicked. Each option shows what it measures and what it costs before you switch it on — On, 188 lin ft, $1,316 — so a toggle is a decision instead of a guess.

Walk inside it before anybody signs

Drop to eye level, walk the shop, and press E to open a door — the overhead lifts on its tracks, a barn door rolls along its track. That answers the two questions a still render cannot: will the RV go through that door, and how much headroom is actually under the lean-to. You can keep editing the building while you are standing in it.

Six views of one building, for six different conversations

The finished shell for the customer, roof off to look down into it, and frame for the crew. Roof framing on its own gives you the purlin layout, and the foundation view draws the ground see-through so the embedded posts, footing pads and concrete collars show. Insulation is drawn at its true thickness inside the girts. Nobody has to imagine the part they care about.

It snaps to sizes a supplier actually sells

Overhead door widths land on 8, 9, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20 and 24 foot; walk doors on 3068 and 3070. Pitch lands on whole rise-in-12, eave height on the standard ladder, and plan dimensions on bay multiples so the posts fall on the grid. Switch the magnet off when you want free sizing — the framing clearances still apply, so a snapped standard size still has to fit its jambs.

One click gets you the elevation shot

Front, gable end, plan and a three-quarter overview, each framed off the structure's own geometry so a gable porch or a side lean-to is in the shot instead of cropped out of it. The camera travels rather than cutting, which keeps a customer oriented. Use the same four shots on every proposal and your drawings start to look like they came from the same office.

Undo undoes what you did, not what the mouse did

One drag is one undo. Five clicks on the Width stepper is one undo. Undo a deleted door and it comes back already selected, so you can put it where you meant it. Every change in the tool runs through the same history, which is why there is no corner of it that quietly cannot be undone.

The design saves itself and stays attached to the customer

Two seconds of quiet and it writes; the header reads Saving, Unsaved or Saved so you are never guessing. A design belongs to a contact, so it is reachable from their record, their pipeline card and their estimate a year from now. Finish puts you back on whichever of those you came from, not on a list you then have to search.

How it works
  1. 1Start from a preset (30x40 Shop, 40x60 Shouse, 60x80 Clear Span) or an existing saved design.
  2. 2Drag the orange axis handles on the ridge, eave and end walls to size the building; the panel steppers write the same fields.
  3. 3Right-click a wall to drop a door, window, lean-to or porch where you clicked.
  4. 4deriveBuilding() turns the spec into placed members and skin panels; deriveTakeoff() measures those same members into a BOM.
  5. 5Autosave writes the spec to building_designs every 2s of quiet; Finish returns you to the contact, opportunity or estimate you came from.
Why we built it

A drawing and a material list produced by two different processes agree right up until someone changes the building, and the gap shows up when the yard delivers something other than what the customer was sold. Somebody eats that difference — a re-order, a change order the customer refuses, or the margin. The picture and the order now come out of a single derivation of one spec, so the building on the screen and the building on the truck cannot disagree. Change the width and the framing, the panel layout, the material list and the price all move together.

  • Customers cannot read a 2D elevation and sign without understanding what they bought.
  • Re-quoting a size change means re-counting every stick.
