Lean-tos, porches and wings

Hang a lean-to, a gable porch, an enclosed wing or a wraparound off any wall, and it frames, clears the main building and gets counted like the rest of the job.

What it is

Attached structures anchored to a wall the same way openings are (wall plus an offset along it), so they survive a resize. A lean-to is a single slope off a main wall with a ledger, its own column line, a beam and rafters. A gable porch is a projecting gable with its ridge perpendicular to the main wall, its own columns and beams, and an optional decorative king-post timber truss. An enclosed wing is a sheeted lean-to at eave height; Wrap adds two enclosed legs meeting at a corner.

Lean-tos, gable porches, enclosed wings and wraps, off any wall

A lean-to is a single slope off a main wall on a ledger, with its own column line, beam and rafters. A gable porch projects with its ridge across the main wall, on its own columns and beams, with an optional decorative king-post timber truss. An enclosed wing is a sheeted lean-to at eave height, and a wrap is two enclosed legs meeting at a corner. Any of the four works on any wall.

Porch material lands on the order with everything else

Columns, beams, ledgers, rafters, purlins, ledger lags and decorative timber come out as their own lines rather than being absorbed into the main building's framing. The porch is where a quote leaks most often, because it is the part that gets added last and estimated by feel.

Porch columns get the same footings as wall posts

The foundation pass runs after the additions are merged in, so a lean-to or porch column is drawn embedded on a footing pad inside a poured collar exactly like a wall post — and the post-hole concrete, the pads and the uplift restraint are on the order. This is the concrete that goes missing when the porch is drawn separately from the building.

It attaches to the steel, not to a line behind it

Additions anchor to their wall the way openings do, and the rules are stated: butt or bury, nothing breaks the roof plane, joints are cut rather than collided, and an addition may never cut into the main building's eave or rake overhang. Earlier versions started at the wall line, which sits behind the skin, so ledgers, beams and roof planes ran straight out through the steel in every render.

The gutter run breaks around the lean-to

A lean-to on a sidewall takes over that stretch of main eave, so the trough breaks around it and the leftover stubs overlap the lean-to by a foot rather than dying on its first rafter. Downspouts drop at building corners, never at a lean-to junction, and lean-to and porch drops sit on the end 6x6s. Linear feet follow the roof you actually drew, including whatever is hung off it.

How it works
  1. 1Additions contribute their own members and panels through the same derived lists, so the renderer and the takeoff pick them up with zero special-casing.
  2. 2Structure follows standard central-states post-frame practice: ledger, column line on postSpacing, beam across the column tops, rafters birdsmouthed over it, purlins on edge, skin on top, outboard fascia and a wall flashing band at the ledger line.
  3. 3Foundation treatment runs after additions merge, so porch and lean-to columns get the same footings and concrete collars for free.
  4. 4The takeoff emits columns, beams, ledgers, rafters, purlins, ledger lags and decorative timber separately from the main building's framing.
Why we built it

Additions were built to different rules than the building they attach to: they started at the wall line, which sits behind the steel, so ledgers, rafters, beams and whole roof planes ran straight out through the skin. Every visible defect across six rounds of review traced back to that one thing. Additions now attach to the outside of the finished shell and obey the same rules as the main frame — stop short or bury, nothing breaks the roof plane, joints cut rather than collided — and an addition can never be placed where it would run into the main building's eave or rake overhang.
