It frames the building the way a crew would

The model is a real post-frame assembly — posts, skirt board, girts, eave struts, trusses, purlins, headers, jambs, cripples and trim — placed the way a crew builds it, in ANSI/ASABE S618 vocabulary.

What it is

The geometry engine derives every member of a post-frame building from the spec: sidewall posts on bay lines with corner posts, end wall posts stopping at the eave with 2x6 gable studs above, a treated skirt board at grade, girts on the post faces, an eave strut, trusses on the bay lines, purlins spliced over trusses into stock lengths, and the full trim package (corner, eave fascia, soffit, eave return band, rake boards, ridge cap).

How it works
  1. 1Naming follows ANSI/ASABE S618 (post, girt, purlin, truss, skirt board, eave/rake overhang) so the takeoff is legible to the industry and maps onto SmartBuild's vocabulary.
  2. 2The wall stack-up is the real section, out-of-wall: posts with faces at the wall line, girts and skirt and eave strut nailed ON the post faces, steel skin on the girt plane.
  3. 3Sidewall girt runs wrap the corner by one board thickness and the end wall runs butt into their backs — the standard lap-and-butt a crew frames.
  4. 4Horizontal runs are split at every post so each cut is a real stock length, not a 60ft stick; purlins splice over truss lines into 20ft maximum stock.
  5. 5Members that carry end cuts are emitted as extruded 2D profiles (the engine computes the cut polygon, the renderer extrudes it).
Why we built it

An earlier framing pass hung girts and skins about half a foot outside the posts, because outward was measured from the wrong plane — that air gap was every floating board a builder saw in the frame view. Members are now placed off the real structural planes, so the frame reads as a frame. Nothing the engine emits as a single cut may exceed what a yard stocks: a 60ft 2x4 is not a product, so a long run comes out as spliced stock lengths and what is drawn is what can be bought.

What's inside
Real cuts, not colliding boxes
Truss chords are plumb-cut at the peak, rafters are birdsmouthed over their beams, rake boards miter at the apex and return level at the eave — the joints a carpenter actually cuts.
Nothing pokes through the steel
An engine-wide rule: every member end either butts another surface with zero overlap or is buried inside it — never left poking through the panels or floating in air.
Rafter and purlin tails stop at the fascia
Every roof stick is clamped to the fascia envelope using its real rotated footprint, so nothing runs past the fascia into open air and the takeoff measures the piece that is actually installed.
Trusses that are factory trusses
Trusses are modelled as plated assemblies with the right web pattern for the span, and the takeoff orders them as factory trusses instead of loose lumber.
Metal connectors where members actually touch
Purlin hangers, truss plates and uplift ties are placed only where two members genuinely meet, and the order counts exactly the hardware the model shows.
Posts in the ground, drawn and priced
Every embedded post is drawn one piece into the ground, on a concrete footing pad, cast inside a full-depth poured collar — and all three are on the order.
