Rafter and purlin tails stop at the fascia

Every roof stick is clamped to the fascia envelope using its real rotated footprint, so nothing runs past the fascia into open air and the takeoff measures the piece that is actually installed.

What it is

A pass over hip-family roof members that cuts each stick so its end reaches the fascia's inner face and stops there, buried mid-fascia. The clamp is applied to the DRAWN length, so the BOM counts the installed piece.

How it works
  1. 1The clamp measures the member's real rotated footprint, not position plus or minus half its size — a tilted rafter's size along its own axis is the SLOPE length, and its depth throws the top corner further down-slope still.
  2. 2Only the axis a member actually runs along is clamped, so a stick that merely sits outside in its short direction is not squashed.
  3. 3Yawed members (the 45-degree hips) are exempt because they are already mitered to stop on both fascias where they are built.
Why we built it

Some rafter and purlin tails ran past the fascia into open air while their neighbours ended correctly, and the first fix cut the middle of a run short while still letting the ends poke a fraction of an inch through the fascia, which showed up as speckle across the fascia face. Tails are now terminated at the roof edge and covered by the fascia, the way the code requires them to be built, and an audit fails the build if a member ends anywhere else. A render with boards sticking through the trim is a render a customer stops believing.

The problem
  • Roof members drawn past their termination, which is both wrong to look at and wrong in the order.
  • Naive bounding-box maths on rotated members producing both over-cut and under-cut sticks.
