What it is

Three roof systems in one building: a raised centre gable plus two wing sheds, with clerestory riser walls between the roof levels. Classic barn configs are wing-centre-wing (-12, -10, -14), so the centre bay runs a quarter to a half of the span and the clerestory riser sits between 2 and 10ft.

How it works
  1. 1The two centre lines are FULL-HEIGHT columns from grade to the raised eave — not stub posts on the wing trusses — with clerestory girts between the wing roof and the raised eave.
  2. 2The raised gable gets its own eave assembly: fascia at the roof edge, a sloped soffit closure under the overhang, and a return band closing clerestory-top to roof underside.
  3. 3Clerestory corner trim is an L that wraps the corner with two legs, exactly like the main level's.
  4. 4Transition flashing where the wing roof dies into the clerestory is an L worn on the OUTSIDE: one leg lying on the low roof, one standing up the wall (IRC R903.2, 4in each way minimum), and the takeoff bills that run.
  5. 5The end wall silhouette follows wings up, clerestory risers, raised gable — a plain triangle leaves the clerestory open.
  6. 6Validations cover minimum span for usable wings, wing width, riser height, ASCE 7 roof-step drift from both wings, and the flashing requirement.
Why we built it

The raised centre section of a monitor roof came out unfinished: no trim or fascia on the top section, corner trim that failed to wrap the corner the way it does on the main level, and nothing at all where the lower roof meets the raised wall — the flashing sat buried inside the raised bay, so the low roof simply ran into bare wall. Every one of those joints is now trimmed and flashed on the model, and each piece lands on the order, because transition flashing is exactly the sort of item that gets left off and discovered from the roof.
