One Customer, Several Opportunities

Adding a lead whose email or phone already exists offers to add another opportunity to that person instead of blocking or duplicating.

What it is

The New Lead form watches the email and phone as you type. On a match it does not block; it explains that this will add a new opportunity to the existing customer rather than creating a duplicate, and prompts for a Business Name to tell the two apart. Siblings render as their own cards on the board and can move through stages independently.

How it works
  1. 1Matching is country-code aware on the phone as well as exact on the email
  2. 2A sibling gets its own local id and shares the customer's CRM identity
  3. 3The board's dedupe logic pins an opportunity to a specific contact, so an estimate on one sibling no longer hides the other
  4. 4The save button changes to read 'Add opportunity to <first name>'
Why we built it

A repeat customer building a second structure hit a wall: adding them again either created a duplicate contact or was blocked outright as a duplicate. Adding a lead whose email or phone already exists now offers to attach another opportunity to that person instead. Making that work meant reworking duplicate suppression by precision — a deal pinned to one specific person suppresses only that person, not everyone who shares an upstream CRM identifier — because otherwise one project's estimate hid the same customer's other project entirely. Phone matching exists for the case that forced it: one person with six separate enquiries and no email address on any of them.

The problem
  • Duplicate blocking preventing legitimate repeat business
  • A second opportunity being hidden by the first one's estimate
  • No way to tell two jobs for one person apart
