Assign an Owner From the Checklist

The New Lead checklist's first item is not a tickbox — it is a live control that assigns the lead to a real person and notifies them.

What it is

Where every other checklist step is a checkbox, Assign an owner renders as an assignment control. Unassigned it shows a plus and opens a picker of the team; assigned it shows the owner's name with a Reassign link. Assigning fires the lead-assigned notification to the new rep automatically and ticks the step.

How it works
  1. 1The picker lists the org's crew members plus the owner and the current user
  2. 2Estimate-backed deals assign via the estimate route; leads with no estimate assign via the lead route; both fire the notification
  3. 3Initial assignment of an unassigned lead is a manager or owner function; reassigning an already-owned lead is open to any pipeline-editing rep
  4. 4Assignment writes through the lead-visibility scope so a restricted rep cannot reassign leads their scope hides
Why we built it

An unassigned lead belongs to nobody, and the first item on the New Lead checklist was a tickbox claiming it had been handed to someone. It is now a live control that assigns the lead to a real person and notifies them, rather than a silent write nobody sees. The picker deliberately includes office staff and the owner themselves — they are on no field crew, and without that an owner could not assign a lead even to himself.

The problem
  • Leads with no owner sitting untouched
  • Office staff being unassignable because they are not on a crew
  • Silent assignments the rep never hears about
