A ringing phone you can always answer

An interrupt banner at the top of the screen naming the caller, with Answer, Silence and Decline — independent of where the dock is or whether it's open.

What it is

When a call rings in, a card appears at the top of the screen on its own portal: the contact's name if we know them, the number, a pulsing indicator and three actions. It is deliberately not dismissible and clears only when the call is answered, declined or the caller gives up.

2 named problems
01Rendered through a portal above the dock, independent of the dock's size, placement and platform
02The caller is matched to a contact by normalised number so the banner shows a name
03Answer accepts, Decline rejects, Silence stops the ringing here only
The top-centre call card: green pulse, contact name in large type, the number beneath, and Answer / Silence / Decline buttons. PhoneDock.tsx. Sample data — no customer information appears here.
How it works
  1. 1Rendered through a portal above the dock, independent of the dock's size, placement and platform
  2. 2The caller is matched to a contact by normalised number so the banner shows a name
  3. 3Answer accepts, Decline rejects, Silence stops the ringing here only
  4. 4Duplicated Answer/Decline controls are suppressed inside the dock so there is never one of each on screen
Why we built it

The Answer and Decline buttons lived inside the phone's own panel, so they existed only while that panel was open. Collapsed to a dot you got a pulsing halo and nothing to click; parked in the nav or on a phone you got nothing at all — the line rang and there was no way to take the call. A ringing call now interrupts at the top of the screen with the caller's name and Answer, Silence and Decline, wherever the phone happens to be.

The problem
  • Unanswerable inbound calls when the dock was collapsed or docked
  • A ring indicator too subtle to notice while working
