A help button no window can hide

The Help & feedback button floats above every window in the app, in the opposite colour of the page, so you can report the window that's misbehaving.

What it is

A round button pinned bottom-right on desktop at a layer above every app modal but below the reporter's own dialog. It is deliberately dark in light mode and light in dark mode. Phones use a header button instead, which no modal covers either.

A modal open over the app with the dark circular help button still visible in the corner; clicking it opens the reporter with that modal named in the header. Sample data — no customer information appears here.
How it works
  1. 1Its stacking layer sits above the app's modal ladder and below its own dialog, so it's reachable from inside a modal and then covered by the form it opens
  2. 2It carries a tour anchor, so the Academy can point at it
  3. 3Anything else in the app can open the same dialog by calling openBugReport()
Why we built it

The window that is misbehaving is usually the window covering the help button, and if you have to close it before you can report it, the screenshot you attach no longer contains the problem. The button now floats above everything in the app, full-screen windows included, so a builder can capture the exact thing they are looking at. It is drawn in the opposite shade to the page — dark on a light screen, light on a dark one — because when it took its colour from the theme it was a pale disc on pale paper, invisible in the one corner it has to be found in.

The problem
  • The one screen worth reporting being the one screen you can't report from
  • A floating control that camouflages itself against the page
