Talk instead of type

A microphone button on text fields that turns speech into text on the device, with nothing uploaded anywhere.

What it is

Long-form fields — a bug description, a contact note — carry a dictate button. It uses the browser's own speech recognition, so no audio leaves the device, there is no API key and no per-minute cost. Interim words stream into the field as you speak, and the final text is appended to whatever was already there so speech and typing can be mixed.

Why we built it

A lot of the people using this run crews, not keyboards, and a fair number will let a problem go unreported rather than risk misspelling something in front of the company that sold them the software. They know exactly what went wrong and can say it in ten seconds. A microphone button on the text fields turns that into typed words on the device itself — nothing is uploaded, and no audio leaves the phone. On a browser that cannot do it the button is not shown at all, because a dead microphone is worse than none.

The problem
  • Notes and reports go unwritten because typing on a jobsite is impractical
  • Self-consciousness about spelling suppresses useful feedback
Sound familiar?
What you get
A note takes ten seconds spoken instead of two minutes typed
Audio never leaves the device and costs nothing per minute
Speech and typing mix freely in the same field
