Spring-Loaded Stage Drop

Hold a dragged card over a collapsed stage for a moment and that stage springs open so you can drop into it.

What it is

While dragging a card, hovering a collapsed stage rail for about a quarter second expands that stage — collapsing the others in accordion mode — so the drop can land there. Moving off cancels the countdown. The behaviour is modelled on macOS Finder spring-loaded folders.

A card held over a collapsed rail; the rail expanding mid-drag with the drop line appearing. Sample data — no customer information appears here.
How it works
  1. 1Dragging over a collapsed rail starts a 280ms timer keyed to that column
  2. 2Re-entering the same rail does not restart the timer; leaving it cancels
  3. 3On fire, the stage expands and in accordion mode the others collapse
  4. 4A drop indicator line shows exactly where in the column the card will land
Why we built it

Collapsing the board to one stage made it readable on a phone and made dragging impossible, because every stage you might drop into was closed. Holding a dragged card over a collapsed stage now springs that stage open, so a rep moves a deal into any stage without first clicking it open.

The problem
  • Collapsed stages being undroppable targets
  • Two-handed drag interactions on a laptop trackpad

What you get
One continuous drag moves a deal to any stage
A readable one-column board without losing drag-and-drop
