SERP competitor discovery

Finds the domains that already rank for your seed keywords — even when you rank for nothing yet — and stores them with their keyword count and estimated traffic value.

What it is

A one-click action that sends every tracked seed keyword to DataForSEO Labs' serp_competitors endpoint and stores the domains that come back, along with how many of your terms they rank for and their estimated traffic value. A skip list keeps out the platforms that show up on every SERP — Google, YouTube, Reddit, Wikipedia, Capterra, G2, Yelp, Home Depot. Each competitor is then marked high, medium or low relevance by hand, and that mark decides who gets mined.

The Roadmap › Competitors table with domain, ranked keyword count, ETV and the high/medium/low relevance toggle. Rendered by src/app/platform/seo/page.tsx. Sample data — no customer information appears here.
How it works
  1. 1Seeds come from the tracked keyword list (seo_keywords), deduped.
  2. 2serpCompetitors() asks which domains rank for that set, up to 60 results.
  3. 3Aggregators and marketplaces are filtered by a skip pattern before storage.
  4. 4Each domain is upserted on (site_id, domain) with ranked_keywords and etv.
  5. 5Relevance is set in the panel; mineUniverse() only mines domains not marked 'low', and link prospecting only uses 'high'.
Why we built it

The comment on the endpoint says why this exists rather than a manual competitor list: "Domains that rank for a set of keywords — SERP competitors even when WE rank for nothing yet." A new site has no rankings to compare against, so the usual 'organic competitors' report is empty. Starting from the keywords instead of from the domain is the only way to see the field before you're in it.

The problem
  • A new site has no rankings, so competitor reports based on overlap return nothing.
  • Aggregator sites dominate the results and hide the real competitors.
