The nine built-in stages are defaults. A per-builder override list replaces them, and the board rebuilds its columns the moment it saves — no page reload. Cards sitting in a stage that no longer exists after an edit are moved into the first column rather than dropped.

Builders do not all run the same process, but the first version of stage editing destroyed data: delete a stage that still had cards in it and the cards went with it. A drifted stage list also once hid every lead on an account, because the cards pointed at a column that no longer existed. Each builder can now rename and reorder their own stages, and any card whose stage disappears parks in the first column where somebody can see it and move it.
