Give a line to a rep — and it actually rings them

Assigning a line points it at that person's own phone in the same act, and says so plainly when they have no number on file.

What it is

Assignment is tenant-side admin work: an admin hands a line to a team member, and the line is wired to ring that person's own phone from their account record. Forwards a human added by hand — an answering service, a spouse's cell — are left untouched.

Also called: assign a phone number · Dave's line · hand a number to a salesperson

3 named problems
01Assignment writes assigned_user_id AND rewrites the owner-shaped forward to the holder's own number
02Only forwards carrying a userId are touched, so manual entries survive
03Unassigning drops the previous owner's forward and keeps the manual ones
The 'Belongs to' selector on a number row, with the inline prompt 'Dave has no phone on file — add one' underneath. PhoneNumbersTab.tsx. Sample data — no customer information appears here.
How it works
  1. 1Assignment writes assigned_user_id AND rewrites the owner-shaped forward to the holder's own number
  2. 2Only forwards carrying a userId are touched, so manual entries survive
  3. 3Unassigning drops the previous owner's forward and keeps the manual ones
  4. 4With no number on file the system adds nothing and names the person, offering to save their number to their account
  5. 5A phone saved in the same request wins, so filling in the number and assigning in one go works
Why we built it

Assigning a line to a rep and making it ring that rep were two unrelated settings, and the screen said so twice over: the table showed the line as belonging to a named rep while that same line's call settings said nobody was assigned and callers went straight to voicemail. The wording had always promised otherwise, so the line looked configured and quietly answered nobody. Assigning a line now points it at that person's own phone in the same act, and says so plainly when they have no number on file rather than routing to nowhere.

The problem
  • Assignment as a label with no effect on routing
  • Two screens disagreeing about the same line
  • Manual phone-tree entries silently overwritten

What you get
One action does what the words say
Existing phone trees survive a reassignment
Missing teammate numbers are named, not guessed
