Change the customer note for one customer only

Rewrite or silence a service's customer note on one estimate without changing the standard wording for anybody else — and put it back in one click.

What it is

Three deliberate states per line: inherit the catalog's standard wording, blank it on purpose for this customer, or override it with something specific. The standard always stays reachable, which is what makes an override undoable.

Also called: custom wording for this client · override the description · blank it out for this quote

The CustomerNoteControl under a service row showing the three states — Standard / Overridden / Hidden for this customer (ServiceLineRow.tsx). Sample data — no customer information appears here.
How it works
  1. 1A line with no note of its own inherits the catalog's standard wording, including every line created before the field existed.
  2. 2An empty string means blank on purpose — this customer gets no note on this line even though the service has one.
  3. 3Any other text is an override for this estimate only.
  4. 4The control shows which state the line is in and offers a one-click return to the standard.
Why we built it

Buyers care about different things, and a buyer who asked three times about frost depth should read about frost depth on their estimate — without the standard wording changing for everybody else, and without the builder having to remember to change it back afterwards. A service's customer note can be rewritten or silenced on one estimate and restored in one click. Saying nothing deliberately and never having set anything are kept distinct rather than treated as the same state, because they mean opposite things and collapsing them would silently delete a choice somebody made on purpose.

The problem
  • Tailoring wording for one buyer meant editing the shared catalog
  • No way to silence a note for one customer without deleting it
