Gable

The default post-frame roof: two planes to a ridge, gable trusses at each end, 2x6 gable studs in the triangle, rake and eave trim.

What it is

Common trusses at the spec'd spacing with gable trusses at each end, 2x4 purlins laid flat, rake and eave overhang framing; roof panels on both slopes, ridge cap, rake trim on all four edges, eave trim on both sidewalls.

Gable end in frame view: plumb 2x6 studs filling the triangle, one raised onto an overhead-door header. Sample data — no customer information appears here.
How it works
  1. 1End wall posts stop at the eave and the triangle above is framed with plumb 2x6 gable studs on the girt spacing.
  2. 2An opening in the wall below does not omit a gable stud — the triangle still needs it; only an opening actually occupying the gable raises the stud's base onto that header.
  3. 3Gable-end steel is taken off as its own line, cut to the rake, because the triangle is not a rectangle.
  4. 4gableStudRise() caps width and pitch so a gable stud never exceeds yard 2x6 stock.
Why we built it

An opening in the wall below used to delete the gable studs above it, leaving a bald patch in the gable over every garage door and window — wrong in the render and missing from the order. The gable above an opening is framed in its own right, and the triangle above the eave is built as studs rather than one long post to the peak, so the pieces stay inside stock lengths and the count matches what gets delivered.

The problem
  • Gable-end infill counted as if it were rectangular wall.
  • Missing gable studs above openings.

What you get
Gable-end steel counted as the triangle it is.
Peak height, ridge and slope length derived rather than measured off a drawing.
