A prepare step runs before upload. Most photos pass through byte-for-byte with no re-encode and no generation loss. Only oversized ones are touched, and then resolution is cut before quality: long edge to 3000px at high quality — still a 10x7 inch print at 300dpi. Orientation is baked into the pixels first so portrait shots do not arrive on their side, and HEIC from an iPhone is converted so non-Apple software can open it.

Two things pull against each other on a jobsite: an upload has to survive one bar of signal, and that same photo is the one you want on the website next spring. Software that solves this by compressing everything quietly ruins the good shots, because a photo already under the limit gains nothing from being squeezed and loses detail it never gets back. So anything under the ceiling uploads untouched, and anything over it has its resolution cut before its quality is, staying well past what a ten-inch print needs. iPhone photos that other software cannot open are converted on the way through, and a portrait shot no longer arrives on its side.
