A join between what the 3D builder draws, the line on the estimate and the row in the material price list. The takeoff says 'Girt, 64 pcs'; a yard doesn't sell girts, it sells 2x6 SPF by the foot. Bound usages are priced from the material catalogue and from the tenant's override of that catalogue row. Unbound usages — a truss fabricated to span and pitch, a door that is a product — fall back to their own row rather than being force-fitted to a lumber SKU.

Prices used to hang off each takeoff line individually, so that one change meant hunting down every girt, cripple and sill on every estimate. Each line is now bound to the real material it is made of, and the binding is the price — changing 2x6 SPF once in your settings changes all of them at once.
