Desktop alerts

Operating-system notifications for action and critical events, but only while the tab is hidden, and only after you press Enable — never on load.

What it is

A dismissible card inside the bell panel offers 'Enable desktop alerts — get pinged even when you're in another tab'. Once granted, qualifying events raise a native notification carrying the tenant-branded favicon, tagged by row id so duplicates collapse, and clicking one focuses the window, marks the row read and navigates to its link. If the browser has blocked them, the panel says so and notes that chimes still work.

01Permission is requested only from a user gesture — the provider never prompts on load.
02OS notifications fire only when the tab is hidden, permission is granted, the event's browser channel is on, and severity is not info.
03While muted they are shown with silent set, since mute governs audio and not visibility.
The 'Enable desktop alerts' card in the bell panel, then a native OS notification with the tenant favicon. NotificationBell.tsx. Sample data — no customer information appears here.
How it works
  1. 1Permission is requested only from a user gesture — the provider never prompts on load.
  2. 2OS notifications fire only when the tab is hidden, permission is granted, the event's browser channel is on, and severity is not info.
  3. 3While muted they are shown with silent set, since mute governs audio and not visibility.
  4. 4The dismissal of the card persists per browser.
Why we built it

The provider states the rule: 'NEVER prompts on load — requestBrowserPermission is gesture-gated'. An unprompted permission dialog is the fastest way to get permanently blocked by a browser, which would also disable the fallback path.

The problem
  • Missed events while working elsewhere
  • Permission prompts fired before any context
