Two behaviours. Esc opens a branded 'Pause this tour?' dialog ('Your spot is saved — resume anytime'). Browser back/forward — the one navigation the click shields can't intercept — pauses the tour instead of arguing with it. While paused, a floating chip shows the tour title, a pulsing dot, Resume and a dismiss X, and it renders even if you've hidden the Academy widget.

- 1Engine-caused navigation is time-stamped, so the guard ignores the hash changes the tour itself just made
- 2A step that legitimately advances on hashchange (the import wizard's 'Go to Sales Pipeline') is exempted — its own listener handles the advance
- 3Pausing persists the status and position, so Resume returns to the same step; a tour that had already finished just closes its completion card instead of being marked dismissed
Walkthroughs that trap you are the reason people refuse to start one. Pressing Escape or the browser's Back button pauses the tour and leaves a small chip with Resume on it, instead of dragging you back to where the script wanted you. The chip stays visible even for people who keep the tutorials hidden — a paused tour you can only find by opening a panel is a tour nobody resumes.
